The Belted Galloway originates from Dumfries and Galloway on the west coast of Scotland. These tough and hardy cattle are well adapted to thrive in rough pastures in some of The UK’s harshest conditions. The breed has become popular for grazing environmental schemes due to their low impact on the environment and ability to be kept outside throughout the winter, living solely on pasture. Their long, course black coat and white ring round their middles makes them a recognisable and popular choice.
As well as being tough and hardy, Belties also produce superb quality beef, maturing much slower than many breeds which ensures a generous fat cover, marbling and enhanced texture and flavour.
The Long Family have farmed cattle in Norfolk at Hillfield Farm for two generations and are famous in the county for their cattle rearing. The family have always liked Belted Galloway cattle and these animals graze the unimproved pastures on the farm. The animals are born, reared and fattened on the farm.
